1.) What is the difference between a home-school and home and school?
In the typical home-school program, parents obtain a curriculum or books on their own and for the most part work on their own to educate their child(ren). In the home and school program, parents are assigned a teacher as the family learning coach, given a curriculum that is research based and students have the same advantages as if they were attending a brick and mortar school. Students actually have a school facility and may attend classes at the facility during the week.
2) What are some of the advantages that students receive?
Unlike traditional home-school programs, our students have all the advantages as if they attended a brick and mortar school. They have a school government, class officers, clubs and activities, sport teams, parties, dances, proms, and yearbook. Parent involvement assures that all of these activities exist. They meet online with their assigned teacher as well as meet at the school facility if they need face to face instruction.
3.) Do students have to attend the school facility for instruction?
No. it is optional on an as need basis.
4.) Are standardized test mandatory for promotion?
No. Standardized testing it is not required for promotion.
5.) Do I need to register my child(ren) with the state for home school?
Yes. Junior Academies is a private program and not a public school.
6.) What is HSLDA?
HSLDA is a nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms. They advocate on the legal front on behalf of their members in matters which include conflicts with state or local officials over home-schooling.1
7.) Who is eligible to enroll in Junior Academies?
Enrollment is open to all students. Parents must be committed to the educational success of their child(ren).
8.) What is the cost of the program?
Fees are based on income with a monthly range of $50 through $500.
9.) How are students placed?
Students are given an assessment test for placement. Students are placed according to their ability and move at their pace.
10.) Is it possible for my child to graduate from high school early?
Yes, a student who completes the required hours for high school may conceivable graduate from high school early.
11.) Do you prepare the high school students for college?
Yes, our families are assigned a counselor to go through the college admissions process. This includes matching students with the right college or university, assist with financial aid, scholarships and grants. We also prepare our students for the SAT, AP and ACT, as well as arrange for college visits.
12.) When does school begin?
Our official opening each year is the day after Labor Day. School continues all year and admissions is on a rolling basis. Unlike many other programs, we do not stop classes or teacher availability during the summer. For those families that want to accelerate and work during the summer, they may do so.
13.) How much time do students spend with a teacher in the school?
Each student is different and has different needs. The parent and teacher work together and decide when it is beneficial for the student to meet face to face with the teacher.
14.) Does the program meet state standards?
Our program exceeds the state standards.
15.) What clubs and activities are available for students?
Students will have the same advantages and privileges as if they were attending a brick and mortar school. Some of the clubs and activities include, but are not limited to: class officers, math club, yearbook, school paper, dance and young leaders.
16.) Will there be team sports?
Yes. Students will participate in team sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer and football.
17.) Will parents have the opportunity to work with their children at the school site?
Yes. Some parents are tutors for their learning group and may wish to use the school library, a classroom, science lab, or computers. This is permissible for all enrolled tutors and students.
18.) Are all students required to attend classes at the school facility?
No. Students have a choice of doing only online courses with a teacher or use the online courses and attend the facility to meet with the teacher.
19.) What is the difference between the Virtual Public School and the Virtual Private School?
Virtual Public Schools are governed by public schools who have the authority as to the program and what the Virtual School does or even if they may continue to exist. Parents cannot be defended by the Home School Legal Defense. They are essentially a public school free to its students. Private Virtual Schools, such as Junior Academies, are governed by the founders, parents, educators and other stakeholders. Parents do pay as they would in any private school. They have more of a voice in what happens in the school, and may be defended by the Home School Legal Defense.
20.) Is there a cutoff date for enrollment?
No. Enrollment is ongoing throughout the year. Students may enroll at anytime.
21.) What is the process for enrollment?
Parents/Guardians should print an admission's application and mail the completed application along with the application fee to the address given. You will be contacted for an assesment for placement, and your child will be enrolled once all documents are submitted. The entire process should take 7 - 10 days.
